Invest in People (Not Technology) to Change the World

Hear Kentaro Toyama '91, the author of Geek Heresy: Rescuing Social Change from the Cult of Technology

Digital initiatives for social causes are everywhere these days – from laptops in education to social media for political activism. In Geek Heresy, Kentaro Toyama '91, former Microsoft computer scientist, draws on his years of experience in India and elsewhere to show that, despite its incredible power, technology fails to provide answers to the world’s social problems. According to Bill Gates, the book’s depth of research “reminds us that there are few one-size-fits-all solutions.” In conversation with Wier Harman, Town Hall’s Executive Director, Toyama will give examples in education, healthcare, and democracy to demonstrate that there is no social change without deep change in people.

After the lecture, meet Kentaro at a post-event gathering in the Town Hall cafe.
