Call for Volunteers: Early College Awareness

For recent grads of Harvard College.  An amazing service opportunity to speak with less advantaged middle school students about your path to college.  Encourage them to attend college, pursue their interests, and make new friends.

Early College Awareness is an event for middle school students and families who qualify for the Washington State College Bound Scholarship program.  We need six recent Harvard College grads.  Please volunteer and bring a friend!  Contact Kelly Charlton, AM CSS '82.

Our goal is to reach out to middle school students who might not normally consider college, or who may be the first in their family to attend college, and provide some support and guidance toward that goal.  The ECA program highlights both private and public two- and four-year colleges, and does not focus on any one college.

Date and Time:  Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 12:30pm - 4:00pm

Location:  University of Washington, Kane Hall  map

Parking:  Free parking at UW Central Plaza Garage - NE 41st Street & 15th Ave NE.  See map on the back of the ECA flyer.

The Harvard Club of Seattle has partnered with Seattle Public Schools, the University of Washington, a variety of local alumni organizations, and a number of non-profits to bring this event to the UW campus.

Part One of our event is an informal panel discussion with recent grads from a variety of colleges about their path to college, their experience in college, and what they are doing now.  Here is a flyer for the event and some suggested talking points for the panelists.

Ask number one:  We would like two recent Harvard College grads to join us on the panel from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.

The conversation is about going to any 4-year or 2-year college, how to start thinking and planning for college, and what college is really like.  Is it a lot of hard work – yes.  Is it a lot of fun – yes.  Will you make new friends that you will keep for the rest of your life – yes.  What is life like after college?

Ask number two:  We would like four recent Harvard College grads to represent the college at a college fair for a diverse group of middle school and high school students from 12:30pm to 4:00pm.  At the same time as our event for middle school students, there is an event for high school students from the same demographic, including a college fair.  Panelist volunteers could go down to our table at the college fair after the discussion.  For reference, here is a copy of the Harvard One Page Handout used for college fairs.

Last year, we had an attendance of 180 middle school students and families and 450 high school students and families, so there is a lot of great energy in the building.

If you'd like to volunteer or if you have questions, please contact Kelly Charlton, AM CSS '82, Early College Awareness Chair and Vice President of Community Service.
