Mentor children from families in crisis

First Place serves families in crisis by providing excellent culturally competent education, housing, and support services enabling families to achieve permanent stability. First Place is looking for Mentors in their Social Services department.

Reporting to the First Place Volunteer Services Director and the mentee's Case Manager, Mentors provide students with an opportunity to have a stable mentoring relationship that supports their emotional and academic needs.  The mentor is responsible for helping the child set goals, meeting with the child at the school one hour a week, and monitoring progress throughout the school year or for as long as the student attends First Place.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
Attend an orientation on determined date and one mentor training each year of service.
Provide structure and stability for one student at First Place on a weekly basis as scheduled.
Confer with the volunteer services director regarding activities and boundary issues.
Confer with the case manager assigned to a student before working with the student and as needed to serve the needs of the student.
Report any noticeable emotional or behavioral changes perceived during time with student.
Gather information from the teacher to determine the needs of the student.
Provide appropriate feedback to the team regarding your mentoring time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Interest in supporting social and educational goalsetting.
Interest in working with children; previous experience with children in a tutorial or educational setting is helpful; ability to show compassion, flexibility and understanding is crucial.
Willingness to conform to on-site mentoring procedures.
Minimum age of 16 for one-on-one mentoring

TIME REQUIREMENTS
Mentors are required to spend an hour per week with their mentee.  Stability in the time and day is important to meet the student’s needs and to plan for other classroom assignments.  Mentors are scheduled Monday through Friday, for one hour each week as arranged.
