About Harvard Music Professor Vijay Iyer
Vijay Iyer, described by The New York Times as a “multimedia collaborator” and “historical thinker,” is one of the most influential composer-pianists working today. Over a 30-year career, he has built a body of work that blends jazz, global traditions, and contemporary composition, earning a MacArthur Fellowship, multiple Grammy nominations, and wide international recognition.
At Harvard University, Iyer serves as the Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts, with appointments in both Music and African and African American Studies. He teaches across disciplines and founded Harvard’s doctoral program in Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry, shaping the nextgeneration of artists and scholars.
In addition to his academic leadership, Iyer remains an active composer and performer, collaborating with leading musicians and ensembles worldwide and releasing acclaimed recordings that push the boundaries of contemporary music. His work reflects a deep engagement with culture, history, and the role of the arts in public life—making him a distinctive voice within both Harvard and the broader artistic community.
